Career Conversations to have with your Student

Encourage your student to recognize their own strengths, skills and values. Asking them about their interests may help bring clarity to the areas they want to focus on within their own career journeys.

Having conversations about the different types of career options that are present in the world may open up your students mind about different possibilities. Look at the different academic programs on the Pitt State pages and review the career options sections underneath each academic program.

Encourage your student to think of the different connections they are have in the lives, particularly on-campus. This can include faculty, staff, supervisors, co-workers, other students, anyone they have built a connection with on-campus.

Getting their resume critqued, updating their Linkedin profile and utilizing their Handshake account for research can help with their overall personal brand.

Provide support to your student as they search for opportunities to expand their experience. Searching for a job/internship can be stressful, providing encouragement may help. Ask how their job search is going and help them brainstorm opportunities that they may not have thought of. Point out the resources on campus and the connections they have built to think of other opportunities.
